What is “Scratch” and should my children use it?

Scratch is the world’s largest coding community for children and a coding language with a simple visual interface that allows young people to create digital stories, games, and animations. Scratch is designed, developed, and moderated by the Scratch Foundation, a nonprofit organisation very much like ourselves.

Scratch promotes computational thinking and problem-solving skills; creative teaching and learning; self-expression and collaboration; and equity in computing. These are all essential skills that will benefit your child in the future.

We have built a number of Neurons activities that introduce children to Scratch, which can be a great help for parents who are new to the subject themselves. Indeed our first coding activity “Let’s make shapes with Scratch” gets your child well on their way with their learning to code journey.
